Course Description
This course is designed to help students to familiarize themselves with the skills and strategies of film translation (from English into Chinese). Students will understand the definition, formats, principles and limitations of film translation. They will also learn how to make cultural adjustments in order to connect to local audience. Each week we will watch a film clip in class, and students will translate a part of dialogue or revise the translation as their assignments. Then in the next week students will discuss their translation and revision in class, and give oral presentations right after that. Through individual practice and group collaboration, students will have hands-on experience and reinforce their subtitle translation abilities. Thus, hopefully the results of this course will fit in with the expectations and needs in industry.

電影字幕翻譯有實際的市場需求，戲院上映外國電影，都要翻譯成中文字幕，所以影片素材來齊的第一件事就是找字幕譯者，等到中文譯稿完成才能進行其他後續作業，因此優秀的電影字幕譯者是電影發行界的重要需求，學生練就此項技能將可從事相關工作。

電影翻譯需具備良好的英文理解能力、中文表達能力及劇情解讀能力，還有時間和空間的限制，這些技能需要長時間培養。對電影翻譯有興趣的同學，即使在所有課程結束後，仍該持續多看電影，多做翻譯練習。

本課程的授課教師專職從事電影字幕翻譯工作十餘年，翻過幾百部院線電影。這門課會以有系統的編排和練習，透過老師講解、翻譯習作、譯文修改、課堂討論、佳譯評比等方式，傳授給學生電影字幕翻譯的實務技巧。
